In Japan, traditional irezumi (full-body tattoos) are strongly associated with the Yakuza – the Japanese mafia. While not technically illegal, these tattoos will get you banned from most public onsens (hot springs), bathhouses, and even some gyms. You’ll be turned away from traditional accommodation and treated like a criminal. The Japanese government is slowly relaxing these rules, but in most places, visible tattoos still mean you’re not welcome.
