Forget bad dates and cringey chats — we’re talking about the moments that got people removed from the villa and sparked thousands of official complaints. From physical fights to racist tweets and full-blown emotional abuse on national TV, Love Island has seen some truly dark stuff. Here are the five worst things contestants have ever done, ranked by just how shocking they really were.

The Shocking Villa Brawl That Got Someone Kicked Out

""

Back in Season 2, newcomer Malia Arkian made history for all the wrong reasons by becoming the first person thrown out of the villa after a physical fight with Kady McDermott. The altercation got so violent that security had to intervene, and Malia was hauled in front of producers, forced to review the footage, and then sent to a hotel before being flown back to the UK . The whole ugly mess happened just 20 minutes after she arrived, and Kady later revealed she was left with a bloody nose from the scuffle that didn’t even make it to air.

Racist Social Media Posts That Got Contestants Axed

""

During Season 7 of Love Island USA, producers had to scramble when old social media posts from multiple contestants using racial slurs resurfaced while they were in the villa. Contestants Cierra Ortega and Yulissa Escobar were both abruptly removed from the island after clips and screenshots showed them using the N-word and other hateful language. The shocking exits sparked major conversations about the show’s vetting process, and both women posted tearful apologies, but by then the damage was already done.

The Casa Amor Postcard That Ruined Relationships

""

Producers took things too far in 2021 when they sent a misleading postcard to the girls showing their partners kissing other women in Casa Amor. The cruel twist made contestant Faye Winter believe that her loyal boyfriend Teddy had cheated, causing a massive, expletive-filled explosion that broke the show’s record for Ofcom complaints with over 24,000 angry viewers. To make matters worse, the edit was totally unfair — the boys had only kissed during a game of dares and were sleeping outside on daybeds the whole time.

The “Gaslighting” That Forced a Charity to Intervene

""

When Adam Collard tore through the villa, he left a trail of emotional destruction that was so bad, the domestic abuse charity Women’s Aid was forced to issue a warning about his behavior . The “bad boy” was accused of systematically gaslighting Rosie Williams, trivializing her feelings and making her question her own reality before callously discarding her for a new bombshell . The charity later slammed ITV for allowing him to return to the show, citing the huge influence the program has on young viewers .

The Crown That Was Lost on National TV

""

In Season 2, beauty queen Zara Holland had sex on national TV in the villa’s hideaway — a decision that cost her the Miss Great Britain crown almost instantly . Pageant bosses publicly stripped her of the title, stating that while they have “no problem at all with sex,” they couldn’t condone what happened on national TV or promote her as a positive role model . Zara was left devastated and crying her eyes out, and the entire fiasco became one of the earliest scandals to truly define the show .
