Think you’re afraid of spiders or heights? That’s adorable. There are people out there who live in terror of peanut butter sticking to the roof of their mouth, or buttons, or even the literal fear of long words. These aren’t made-up internet jokes – they’re real, documented phobias that make everyday life a waking nightmare. Here are five of the strangest fears that actual human beings suffer from.

Yes, this is real. People with this phobia are terrified of eating peanut butter because they dread it sticking to the roof of their mouth and choking them. Some can’t even be in the same room as an open jar. Imagine explaining that at a sandwich shop.

Buttons on clothing send these sufferers into a cold sweat. They find the look, feel, and even the sound of buttons absolutely revolting – some will only wear zippers or velcro. One famous sufferer? Steve Jobs, who designed his iconic turtleneck specifically to avoid buttons.

The cruelest joke ever played by psychologists. This phobia is the fear of long words – and the name for it is 36 letters long. Sufferers can barely say what they’re afraid of without having a panic attack. That’s either genius or pure sadism.

It sounds like a joke, but some people are genuinely terrified of washing themselves. The fear can stem from a childhood trauma involving slipping in the tub or nearly drowning. Unfortunately, the social consequences of this phobia are just as scary as the bath itself.

This one is so modern and so real that it has its own name. Nomophobia is the crippling anxiety you feel when your phone battery dies, you lose signal, or you forget your device at home. Let’s be honest – half of us have a mild case of this already.

Think you’re afraid of spiders or heights? That’s adorable.
