North Korea holds the top spot on the World Watch List as one of the most brutal dictatorships on earth. The UN recently reported that repression has deepened across the country, with “no other population … under such restrictions in today’s world”. Surveillance has grown more pervasive with new technology, and punishments have become harsher \u2014 including the death penalty for offences like sharing foreign TV dramas. For Christians, even the slightest hint of worshipping Jesus can have “devastating consequences”. Starvation, forced labour, torture, and imprisonment are daily realities for millions. The UN has called North Korea’s prison camps a “total anomaly in 2025” and demanded they be closed.<\/span><\/p>\n

Syria \u2014 The Civil War That Never Ends<\/span><\/h2>\n

Syria has jumped from No. 18 to No. 6 on the World Watch List \u2014 the biggest leap by far. After years of brutal civil war, Christians now face systematic attacks, including a church attack in Damascus that killed 22 people and wounded 63. The Christian population continues to dwindle, leaving those who remain “even more exposed, with nowhere to run to”. Freedom of worship is being “systematically suffocated” under the new regime. Myanmar \u2014 The Junta That Bombs Its Own People<\/span><\/h2>\n

Since the 2021 military coup, Myanmar’s junta has waged a campaign of unimaginable violence against its own people. Over 100,000 civilian homes have been destroyed in arson attacks. 3.6 million people are displaced, and nearly 22 million require humanitarian assistance. When a massive earthquake struck in March 2025, the junta blocked relief efforts in areas outside their control and even escalated their attacks, launching more airstrikes on civilian targets than any previous quarter. Schools, clinics, monasteries, and displacement camps have all been bombed. The junta is now planning sham elections, with opposition leaders arrested, detained, tortured or executed.<\/span><\/p>\n
