You’ve seen the statues, the paintings, the Hollywood versions. But what did ancient people actually look like? Thanks to modern forensic science, AI, and a few lucky skulls, we now know the real faces behind the legends. And spoiler alert: they look nothing like the movies.

Neolithic Man – The 5,600‑Year‑Old Farmer

""

Chinese archaeologists reconstructed the face of a man who lived near the Yellow River around 5,600 years ago during the Yangshao culture. Using 3D modelling and genetic analysis to predict skin tone and hair colour, they achieved about 90% accuracy. He was around 40 years old, with a broad, weathered face – a farmer who spent his life working the land, not posing for statues.

Ava – The Bronze Age Beauty

""

Ava was a young woman who died over 3,700 years ago in the Scottish Highlands, aged just 18 to 22. Forensic artist Hew Morrison used scans of her skull to recreate her face, and DNA analysis later revealed she had brown eyes and dark skin. Her skull was an abnormal shape – possibly from deliberate binding. She was buried in a pit carved into solid rock, suggesting she may have been someone important.

Tutankhamun – The Sickly Boy King

""

Sorry, but the golden death mask lied. The real Tutankhamun had a slim build, stood around 5’6″, and had a slightly longer‑than‑normal skull with unusually prominent front teeth. He also had a club foot, likely walked with a cane, and suffered from multiple health issues because his parents were brother and sister. Not exactly the chiseled warrior Hollywood imagined.

Myrtis – The 11‑Year‑Old Girl From Ancient Greece

""

Myrtis died of typhoid fever during the Plague of Athens in 430 BC, at just 11 years old. Her skull was unearthed from a mass grave in Athens, and scientists used the Manchester method to reconstruct her face. She’s the first ordinary ancient Greek whose face has ever been reconstructed. She looks like any 11‑year‑old – a haunting reminder that children suffered in ancient times too.

Julius Caesar – The Bulge That Changed History

""

The legendary Roman emperor had a “crazy bulge” on his head – a deformation likely caused by a difficult childbirth. A 3D reconstruction from a marble portrait revealed this unusual feature, along with a receding hairline that looks nothing like the perfect marble busts. The real Caesar was asymmetrical, balding, and a bit lumpy. Not exactly the chiseled hero of Shakespeare.

The Pompeii Victim – A Man Who Died Running

""

Archaeologists used AI to reconstruct the face of a man who died in the AD 79 eruption of Mount Vesuvius. He was found holding a terracotta mortar over his head – an improvised shield against falling volcanic debris. He was running toward the coast with another person, trying to escape the ash and pumice. His face is frozen in a moment of desperate survival.

Richard III – The King Under The Car Park

""

Richard III’s skeleton was found under a Leicester car park in 2012. His facial reconstruction shows a thin‑lipped, bright‑eyed man with a prominent chin and an arched nose. DNA analysis revealed he had a 96% probability of blue eyes and a 77% probability of blond hair. He was only 32 when he died – and he looks younger, tougher, and far more human than Shakespeare’s hunchbacked villain.
