You’re looking at a photo, and everything seems normal. A smile, a wave, a casual moment frozen in time. But what you don’t know—what the people in the photo don’t know—is that disaster is seconds away. From an assassination in a hotel kitchen to a celebrity’s final moments on a reef, these six photos were taken right before everything went horribly wrong.

Bill Eppridge and Harry Benson captured Robert F. Kennedy walking through the kitchen of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968. He had just won the California Democratic primary. He was smiling, shaking hands, surrounded by supporters. Seconds later, Sirhan Sirhan stepped out of the crowd and fired three shots. Kennedy died the next day. The photo shows a man at the peak of his political career—unaware that he had less than a minute to live.

This photo was taken in 1912, just before the RMS Titanic departed on her maiden voyage from Southampton. The ship looks majestic. The crew looks confident. No one on board knew that in just four days, the “unsinkable” ship would hit an iceberg and take over 1,500 souls to the bottom of the Atlantic. The photo captures a moment of pure optimism—right before history’s most famous maritime disaster.

Behind-the-scenes photos of Heath Ledger on the set of The Dark Knight show him fully immersed in the role of the Joker. He’s smiling, laughing, and joking with the crew. What the photos don’t show is the toll the role took on him—the insomnia, the isolation, the descent into darkness. He died of an accidental overdose on January 22, 2008, six months before the film’s release. The photos of him on set are the last images of a brilliant actor who gave everything to his craft.

This 1922 photo shows Vladimir Lenin and a young Joseph Stalin together in Gorki. They’re smiling, relaxed, seemingly united. What Lenin didn’t know—what nobody knew—was that Stalin would soon rise to absolute power, betray Lenin’s legacy, and become one of the most brutal dictators in human history. Lenin had his doubts about Stalin, famously writing a “testament” warning against him, but it was too late. The photo shows the two men who would shape the Soviet Union—one just before his death, the other just before his rise to terror.

This iconic photo captures the exact moment Diego Maradona punched the ball past England’s goalkeeper in the 1986 World Cup quarter-final. The Argentine legend later called it the “Hand of God”. In the photo, you can see his fist connecting with the ball—and the referee missing it entirely. It’s a moment of pure, audacious cheating that would go down in history as one of the most controversial moments in sports. The photo shows the moment a genius became a villain.

One of the last photos of Steve Irwin, taken in 2006, shows him snorkelling off the coast of Queensland, Australia, his face lit up with his characteristic enthusiasm. He was filming a documentary, Ocean’s Deadliest, when he approached a stingray from the side—a move that spooked the animal. The stingray’s barb pierced his heart, killing him within seconds. The photo shows a man who lived his life surrounded by danger, never knowing that his final encounter would be with one of the ocean’s most docile creatures.

You’re looking at a photo, and everything seems normal.
