You think that cool tattoo is a great idea? Try explaining it to customs officials in Tokyo, a hotel manager in Bangkok, or the police in Germany. Certain tattoos aren’t just frowned upon in some countries – they’re flat-out illegal. From Nazi symbols that can land you in prison to Buddhist ink that will get you deported, here are five tattoos you should never, ever get.

This one should be obvious, but apparently not obvious enough. Swastikas, SS bolts, and any other Nazi symbols are explicitly illegal in Germany, Austria, France, Poland, Hungary, Brazil, Russia, and several other countries. If you have a visible Nazi tattoo and you visit Germany, you can be arrested, fined, and possibly deported. Displaying these symbols violates laws against inciting hatred and promoting banned organizations. When you get that tattoo, you’re not just making a statement – you’re making yourself a criminal in half of Europe.

Think that Buddha tattoo is spiritual and cool? In Thailand and Sri Lanka, it’s a fast track to trouble. Tattoos depicting Buddha, mandalas, or Sak Yant spiritual symbols are strictly prohibited for both locals and tourists. Tourists have been arrested, fined, and even deported for displaying Buddhist tattoos. In Thailand, it’s considered deeply disrespectful to use sacred religious imagery as body art. If you have a Buddha tattoo, keep it covered at all times – or better yet, don’t get one at all.

In Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, tattoos depicting Allah, the Quran, or the Prophet Mohammed are banned outright. Even in the UAE, certain tattoo designs can get you in serious trouble. In Iran, tattoos associated with “devil worship” or Westernisation are particularly problematic. What you think is a cool design could be seen as a deadly insult in the eyes of local authorities. Getting a religious tattoo that you don’t fully understand is like walking through a minefield – you might get blown up.

In Japan, traditional irezumi (full-body tattoos) are strongly associated with the Yakuza – the Japanese mafia. While not technically illegal, these tattoos will get you banned from most public onsens (hot springs), bathhouses, and even some gyms. You’ll be turned away from traditional accommodation and treated like a criminal. The Japanese government is slowly relaxing these rules, but in most places, visible tattoos still mean you’re not welcome.

In most countries, gang-related tattoos aren’t just a bad idea – they’re a permanent red flag. In the US, certain tattoos can identify you as a gang member to law enforcement. In South African prisons, tattooing is banned entirely because of its connection to the notorious Numbers Gang. And in many Asian countries, tattoos are still associated with criminal behaviour. If you get a tattoo that even looks like it could be gang-related, you’re putting a target on your back for the rest of your life.

You think that cool tattoo is a great idea?
