When you dial 911, someone’s life is supposed to be on the line. A heart attack. A burglary. A fire. But apparently, not everyone got the memo. From a woman who needed help charging her phone to a man who wanted the police to sing him Happy Birthday, here are five times people called 911 for reasons so stupid they should have just googled it.

A Cleveland woman dialled 911 because she needed help charging her cellphone. Not because she was in danger. Not because someone was hurt. She just wanted to charge her phone. The dispatcher patiently explained that 911 is for life-threatening emergencies, not for topping up your battery. The call wasted precious time that could have gone to someone actually dying.

A caller contacted 911 in distress because they had lost their phone and wondered if an officer could call the phone so they could hear it ring. The logic was almost impressive: if a cop calls it, they’ll hear it, and then they can find it. Except that’s not how emergency services work. The caller received a fine of up to $2,000 instead of a rescue mission.

A person called 911 in genuine distress because their friend had cooked their pork chop without permission. Yes, you read that correctly. Someone dialled an emergency number because their dinner plans were ruined. The pork chop wasn’t in danger. The caller was just really, really upset about a piece of meat.

When you dial 911, someone’s life is supposed to be on the line.
