Death is inevitable. But for some people, it’s also spectacularly stupid. From a lawyer who wanted to prove a point about unbreakable glass to a Segway owner who fell off a cliff on one of his own scooters, history is full of people who found incredibly creative ways to check out early. Here are six of the dumbest ways people have actually died.

Edward Archbold – The Bug-Eating Champion Who Choked On Roaches

""

In October 2012, 32-year-old Edward Archbold won an insect-eating contest in West Palm Beach, Florida, by consuming dozens of live roaches and worms. The prize? A python. The problem? Roach body parts obstructed his airway, and he choked to death on his own gastric contents. He won the contest. He also won a Darwin Award. The python probably went to someone else.

Robert Overacker – The Jet Ski Daredevil Who Forgot His Parachute

""

On October 1, 1995, 39-year-old Robert Overacker decided to ride a jet ski over Niagara Falls. His plan? Deploy a rocket‑propelled parachute to land safely below. Unfortunately, he forgot to attach the parachute to his body. The parachute deployed, floated away, and Overacker fell to his death. The 15th person to challenge the Falls. Also the 15th person to lose.

James “Jimi” Heselden – The Segway Owner Who Drove Off A Cliff

""

In September 2010, 62-year-old James Heselden, the British millionaire who owned the Segway company, was riding one of his own off‑road Segways on his estate. He tumbled 30 feet off a cliff and was found in a river. The man who made the “future of personal transportation” killed himself on one. The irony was so thick you could cut it with a scooter.

Garry Hoy – The Lawyer Who Proved Unbreakable Windows Were Breakable

""

Garry Hoy was a lawyer at a Toronto law firm on the 24th floor. His party trick? Running full‑speed into the office windows to prove they were unbreakable. He’d done it dozens of times. Then one day, the glass didn’t break—the window popped out of its frame, and Hoy fell 24 stories to his death. He proved the windows weren’t unbreakable. He just didn’t live to brag about it.

Philip Contos – The Biker Who Died Protesting Helmet Laws

""

In 2011, 55‑year‑old Philip Contos joined a protest ride in New York against mandatory helmet laws. He was proudly not wearing a helmet. During the ride, he slammed on his brakes, flew over the handlebars, and hit his head on the pavement. He died on the spot. When you die protesting a law designed to keep you alive, you’ve officially made your point—and left your genes out of the pool.

Thomas Midgley Jr. – The Genius Who Was Strangled By His Own Invention

""

Thomas Midgley Jr. was a brilliant American chemist who invented leaded petrol and CFCs—two inventions that killed millions. But his own death was even more ironic. At 51, he contracted polio and became disabled. He designed a complex system of ropes and pulleys to lift himself out of bed. On November 2, 1944, he got tangled in his own contraption and was strangled to death. A man who accidentally killed millions was killed by his own ropes.
