History has a sick sense of humour. Just when everyone thinks they have the future figured out, the universe throws a curveball that makes experts look like fools, pundits eat their words, and the entire world collectively say: “Wait… what?” From walls that were never supposed to fall to presidents nobody expected and viruses that changed everything, here are six things that were considered impossible — until they actually happened.

For nearly three decades, the Berlin Wall stood as the ultimate symbol of the Cold War divide. It was concrete, it was guarded, and it was supposed to last forever. East German officials had no intention of letting their citizens cross to the West. Then, on November 9, 1989, an East German official accidentally announced that travel restrictions were being lifted immediately. Thousands of Berliners flooded the checkpoints. Guards stood aside. People started chipping away at the wall with hammers and chisels. Within months, the Wall was rubble. Something that seemed permanent, eternal, and unshakeable — vanished in a matter of weeks.

In 2015, when Donald Trump announced his candidacy for president, the political establishment laughed. He was a reality TV star with no political experience, and his rhetoric was considered too extreme for mainstream America. Pollsters gave him a single-digit chance of winning the Republican nomination, let alone the presidency. On election night 2016, as the results came in, news anchors were visibly stunned. The man who was supposed to be a joke candidate became the 45th president of the United States. Political scientists, pollsters, and pundits have been rethinking their entire profession ever since.

On June 23, 2016, British voters went to the polls to decide whether the United Kingdom should leave the European Union. The polls predicted a comfortable victory for Remain. The bookmakers had it at around 80% probability that Britain would stay. The political establishment, the media, and most experts were convinced it would never happen. Then the results came in: 51.9% voted Leave. The British pound crashed, the prime minister resigned, and the country spent the next several years in political chaos. Something that was supposed to be a “won’t happen” became the defining political event of the decade.

Before September 11, 2001, the idea that terrorists could hijack commercial airliners and fly them into iconic American buildings was the stuff of Hollywood thrillers, not reality. It was unthinkable. On that Tuesday morning, four planes were hijacked. Two hit the World Trade Center. One hit the Pentagon. One crashed in a field in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people died. The world changed overnight. It wasn’t just a tragedy — it was something that nobody, not even intelligence agencies, thought could happen on American soil.

Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Soviet Union was one of the two global superpowers. It had nuclear weapons, a massive military, and seemed like it would last for generations. Even Western intelligence agencies believed the USSR would survive for decades. In 1991, it simply… stopped existing. The entire country dissolved into 15 independent nations. The Cold War was over, and nobody saw it coming. Even the CIA had predicted the USSR would continue well into the 21st century.

Before 2020, the idea that a virus would shut down the entire global economy, ground international travel to a halt, and force billions of people to stay in their homes seemed like science fiction. Bill Gates had warned about a potential pandemic in a 2015 TED Talk, but most people dismissed it as alarmist. Then the virus spread from Wuhan to the entire world. Borders closed, stock markets crashed, and millions died. The world was not prepared. The pandemic wasn’t just unexpected — it was unimaginable. Until it happened.

History has a sick sense of humour.
